Liam was born in Ireland, and completed his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science at University College Cork (UCC) and University College Dublin (UCD). His BSc. and MSc. were primarily focused in plant biology, whereas now his main focus of research was soil science. He conducted undergraduate research in School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, UCC, and completed his MSc in the Department of Plant Biology, UCD with Dr. Renou-Wilson. He then spent 6 months working in the Ecological Systems Laboratory, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland studying the links between above-ground biotic factors and below-ground soil communities and function. In May 2015 he began my PhD in Soil Science at the University of Alberta in the Department of Renewable Resources with Dr. David Olefeldt. His PhD is focused on the impact that permafrost thaw has on the carbon cycle of northern peatlands.
